Small Bathroom Renovations - Size Isn’t Everything

Regardless of the size of your bathroom you are more than likely going to run into problems during the project that you never imagined when you started the job. There are plenty of cases involving a small bathroom renovation that have turned into major headaches. These have involved unexpected problems particularly when the job involves removing existing walls so as to be able to replace old plumbing and electrical work. With the prospect of encountering problems in mind, please remember that it is not the size of the bathroom that has to be considered as much as it is the extent of the small bathroom renovation work being planned.

Another common problem with a small bathroom renovation is because the small area involved there never seems as though there is not enough space in which to work and this can cause delays in getting certain phases of the remodeling completed. The first thing to look at is the door size, it has to be wide enough so you can move cabinets and bathtubs in and out of the room. In the old days they often constructed the last wall of the bathroom after all of the fixtures had been installed. If this was the case with your current home it is highly likely you will have to remove a wall to carry out your planned small bathroom renovation project.

Even though the amount of flooring and wall covering that is needed during a small bathroom renovation may only be minor, getting it installed in a such a confined space can be a bit of a problem. Some cutting and pre-fitting work may have to be done outside the bathroom so that the bathroom area is not cluttered.

Changes In Floor Plan May Not Be Optional

Depending on the size of your bathroom, it may not be possible to move certain fixtures around. For example, if there is only one area that that can accommodate a full-size bathtub, it will not be possible to place it in another area of the room. In many cases, a small bathroom renovation may have to be limited to just changing the color and floor styles without undertaking any major structural changes so as to enlarge the size of the bathroom.

While a sink or a commode can be replaced with a more modern model, usually one with the same dimensions as the existing model, the overall design of the bathroom will out of size constraints have to remain unchanged. Updated fixtures can often give the appearance that a major small bathroom renovation has taken place even though you have not been able to increase the floor area. If you are not able to enlarge your bathroom area we suggest you use lighter colors for walls and the floor and any window dressings that may be in the room which will help give the appearance that the room is actually bigger than what it really is.
