Small bathroom design requires some strategic planning, as not all small bathroom ideas will work for your space or needs. List specific items you want in your new bathroom, and some of the problems you want to solve by finding small bathroom ideas.
Decide whether it will be a full bathroom remodel or only a partial remodel. Get a ballpark idea of how much you can budget for this project. This will be refined as you shop for materials and decide what is most important to you.
Changes you want to make in your bathroom will depend on how it is used, and who uses it. Your small bathroom design will vary depending on if it is a main bathroom, or a master bath. Each has it’s own needs.
A main bath may have to serve the needs of various age groups. If it is the only bath, it will serve the whole family as well as guests. If there are young children in the household, that needs to be taken into consideration.
While you want a a main bathroom to function well and be attractive, you may want to give a master bath a real touch of luxury by adding special materials not suited for heavy traffic, or amenities better suited for a couple such as a two person soaking bathtub
Consider your color choices in bathroom wall covering, flooring materials and surfacing. Using lighter colors will help to lighten up and expand the visual space. Tone on tone is a better choice for a small bathroom, and if you select neutral colors your bath will not get outdated anytime soon. An extra advantage to neutral colors is that it gives you more leeway with future changes in decor.
Keep flooring patterns simple as well as light in color. Using tiles that are larger will also help to expand the feel of your bathroom space. Avoid busy designs.
If you must use a shower curtain, keep it an all over color rather than a bold or themed pattern. Better yet, invest in a glass shower door which slides to save space.
Utilize light from a window if possible without sacrificing your privacy. Some bathroom windows are placed high enough not to be a problem. If you must cover your window for privacy, keep the window treatment sleek and simple.
Cabinetry should be kept light as well. Install streamlined cabinetry in light tones, preferably closed. Open shelves attract things such as knick knacks. Better to have your storage closed. This gives a unified look, and the eye travels accross it, adding again to visual space. If you are keeping your old cabinetry, consider sanding and re-staining it if it is dark in color. Stains come in wood tones as well as actual colors.
Replace towel rods with rings. Rings are more elegant, and fit closer to the wall. Think how much wall space a standard towel bar consumes.
There are also fixtures that are designed for smaller bathroom spaces. This too is an option for your small bathroom design. The fixtures themselves are designed at a smaller scale, freeing up space.
The shape of your bathroom may make another small bathroom idea useful. Corner fixtures can sometimes be a better fit for your space and it’s shape. There are tubs, pedestal sinks, and even toilets designed for corner applications.
Once your small bathroom design has come together and you have your bath space renovated, keep it tidy. It doesn’t take much to make a small space look messy. Keep infrequestly used items in other space such as a linen closet. Dishpans from the dollar store will keep these items organized and easy to mobilize when they are needed.
